The working environment has a direct impact on the productivity of your staff. When the atmosphere in a working environment is good and the staff have a positive approach to work then output will be higher. Thankfully, if the office is a nice place to be, this could have a knock-on-effect and ensure your staff are content and effective.

But exactly how can you create the correct environment? Many people are under the false impression that making over an office involves a large cash investment, but this simply isn’t true. Little changes and gestures may have a big impact on staff members.

It's a well known fact that colours may influence a person's outlook, this is also true in a working environment. The colour orange has been proven to encourage people's creativity and yellow may influence the degree of motivation. Blue can be a calming colour and helps to alleviate stress. This use of colour may be introduced in offices just with a lick of paint. Or possibly if you were considering replacing office furniture anyway you may be able to incorporate such colours within your chosen furniture. If it's chairs you are looking to invest in, make sure they are suitable for use over prolonged periods.

Having plants at work is often a quick and easy solution to improve the work place. The presence of plants can really help individuals to feel calm and relaxed whilst purifying the inside air.

The quality of air within office environments is a common cause of complaint. Poor air quality can result in fatigue and illness, which can be damaging to the staff and even worse for the company. It might also be worth checking for damp if you suspect poor quality of air, as damp is among the most commonly seen factors behind poor air quality. Also ensure that the office is being cleaned regularly and thoroughly, and ensure to open windows daily to create a flow of air.

Lack of space can be a cause of stress. If possible, each member of staff should have their own desk, which should be of a reasonable size with some storage. A decent amount of personal space is essential; not having their own space may cause stress levels to go up, especially if staff are not very friendly with fellow colleagues.

Space that is personal to each individual staff member also helps to generate a positive working environment. This calls for not moving staff around the room too frequently, unless completely necessary, and letting them adorn their desks with a picture or two, or personal belongings which help build a homely feel. When someone feels at home at work they are more likely to be happy and contented members of staff having a better attendance rate than compared to their working environment being cold and impersonal.

As an employer there are ways through which you can help your employees feel happier at work, one way is making sure they feel valued and that their contribution matters. Personalised calendars or personalised diaries are practical items that might help staff organisation. The personalised nature of the items can even encourage your staff to relate the office space to be their space, along with increasing a feeling of being a member of a team, and part of the company. So you could perhaps present your staff with items for example personalised calendars and personalised diaries as an expression of gratitude, and they will demonstrate their appreciation of the gesture via their work.

The lighting in the office can be a key factor in employees performance. The light has to be bright enough making sure that everyone can see clearly, yet not so bright as to feel intrusive. In an office where staff are spending most of their time in front of a computer, slightly duller lights are beneficial, if the light is too bright, the computer screen can be difficult to see. Using individual desk lamps can correct any issues that may occur while not using a computer.

Finally, if you are lucky enough to have an office that benefits from a lot of sunlight, take full advantage of it! Don’t cover windows with cabinets and ensure blinds or curtains are opened at the start of every day.
